Wolfe, Beckstrom to get Purple Hearts, Hegseth says
Two West Virginia Guardsmen shot near the White House last November will receive the Purple Heart, honoring their sacrifice during a rare domestic attack, officials said.
- On Friday, Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that West Virginia National Guard members Sarah Beckstrom and Andrew Wolfe will receive the Purple Heart while speaking at a reenlistment ceremony on the National Mall.
- On Nov. 26, 2025, an ambush-style attack near the Farragut Square Metro station, Washington, D.C., involved suspect Rahmanullah Lakanwal, who shot Beckstrom and Wolfe before being restrained and arraigned.
- Hegseth said, `One lost, one recovering, both soon to be Purple Heart recipients`, noting Beckstrom died and Wolfe is recovering with surgery and rehab planned for March.
- West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey had requested Purple Hearts on December 19, 2025, and the Pentagon said medals will also honor responders at the scene, affecting more than 2,600 guardsmen currently serving in Washington.
- The decision revives questions about Purple Heart eligibility, as prosecutors seek charges allowing the death penalty, the administration labeled the attacker a terrorist, Afghan visa applications were halted, and deployment extended through the end of 2026.
