Study finds there’s huge swimming potential in Brussels this year
The lack of public swimming areas in Brussels was the focus of a new study, which has revealed that nearly half of the rivers, canals and other waterways in Brussels and Flanders are now sufficiently clean for swimming. Our large waterways are cleaner than expected, our small streams and canals more polluted than expected. This is evident from the citizen science project Water Samples by De Standaard, Waterland vzw and KU Leuven, in which more than 6,000 samples were taken in Flanders and Brussels.
Twelve percent of all Flemish households still discharge their wastewater untreated into a watercourse. The small watercourses in particular are in bad shape. Like the Molenbeek in Sint-Genesius-Rode, which is “exemplary for so many places in Flanders”.
