Will the US-Canada trade war sway elections in border state battlegrounds? What Michigan voters said
A POLITICO poll found more than half of Americans say Trump was wrong to impose new tariffs on Canada.
On Wednesday, Michigan GOP nominee Mike Rogers released a campaign ad distancing himself from President Donald Trump's tariff strategy, becoming the latest swing-state Republican to break with the president.
President Donald Trump launched the trade war's current phase in August by imposing 50% tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian imports, which Canada matched dollar-for-dollar on United States products.
Even among self-described "MAGA Trump voters" who support his tariff strategy, 40% said he should have waited until after the midterms to avoid jeopardizing elections in Michigan and Maine.
In Maine, Republican Senator Susan Collins called for ending the trade war, while Ohio Republican Senator Jon Husted defended the president's pursuit of a better deal; Democratic nominee former Sen. Sherrod Brown described the tariffs as a disaster.
