Lithuania weighs windfall tax on Orlen Lietuva amid spiking fuel prices
Lithuania is considering imposing a windfall tax on Orlen Lietuva, the Baltic states’ only oil refiner, following an investigation into its pricing practices, Finance Minister Kristupas Vaitiekūnas said Tuesday.
Lithuanian authorities are considering the possibility of additional taxation of Orlen Lietuva if it turns out that the refinery is generating income due to the increase in the price of crude oil, especially diesel oil, on international markets due to the war in the Middle East.
Lithuanian authorities are examining the possibility of introducing a new tax on Orlen Lietuva, the country's largest refinery. This is due to rising gasoline and diesel prices on global markets, fueled by the conflict in the Middle East. The government is also taking other measures to mitigate the impact of rising prices on residents.
After clarifying the pricing practices of Orlen Lietuvos, the only oil refining and import company in the Baltic States, Lithuania would consider taxing the company additionally - on a similar principle to how banks were previously taxed with a temporary solidarity contribution, says Finance Minister Kristupas Vaitiekūnas.
