UK police assess Palestine Action post by national security adviser's wife
Helm said authors should not be punished for supporting Palestine Action as the ban has led to thousands of arrests and book withdrawals.
On Friday, the Metropolitan Police announced they are assessing a social media post by author Sarah Helm, wife of National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell, which appeared to express support for Palestine Action, a banned terrorist organisation.
Earlier this week, Irish author Sally Rooney announced she must withdraw her books from the UK because she pledged royalties to the group, which was proscribed under the Terrorism Act last year.
Responding to pundit Adam Boulton on Thursday, Helm wrote: "God help us authors who support Palestine and Palestine Action." Membership or support is punishable by up to 14 years in prison.
The Campaign Against Antisemitism has called for a police investigation into Helm, while a Government spokesperson stated these views are held by an individual who does not represent the Government in any capacity.
Amnesty International reports more than 3,500 arrests since the ban, while Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said last month the Government is "looking at" whether the proscription remains politically sensible.
