Labour Party Calls to End Local Ties with Greens Unless They Reject Zionism Motion
Labour says local Green groups must condemn the motion within seven days or face the end of power-sharing deals in 18 councils.
Labour demanded on Wednesday that local councils terminate power-sharing agreements with the Green Party unless local Greens condemn the motion declaring "Zionism is racism" within seven days.
Earlier this month, the Green Party adopted a policy labeling support for an Israeli state as equivalent to racism, rejecting a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict.
Party chair Bridget Phillipson described the policy as "wrong and antisemitic," while the ultimatum impacts 17 councils across England and one in Wales, including Sheffield City Council.
During Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday, Andy Burnham condemned the motion as "wrong" and "antisemitic," ruling out future power-sharing deals with the Green Party.
Labour expects local Green groups to pressure their national leadership to reconsider the policy, warning that failure to provide a "clear and unambiguous statement" will end arrangements.
