Equalities Watchdog Writes to Green Party to Probe Impact of Zionism Policy
The watchdog is assessing complaints that the motion could discriminate against Jewish people, while Labour says it will end council power-sharing unless the Greens back down.
On Thursday, the EHRC wrote to the Green Party requesting information about its recently adopted "Zionism is racism" motion to assess potential violations of the Equality Act 2010.
Alongside Jewish groups, Green MPs and former leaders criticised the motion, with one calling it "dangerous" and "divisive" while describing Zionism as an ideology supporting "an ethnonationalist Jewish state in historic Palestine."
Labour has said it will end power-sharing agreements with the Greens on local councils if they do not reject the policy within seven days, impacting 17 councils across England and one in Wales.
The Green Party said it "will not discriminate against or exclude people for holding Zionist views," adding the motion has "no impact on membership conditions or internal disciplinary processes."
Following complaints from the Campaign Against Antisemitism alleging party discrimination, the EHRC will assess information to "take action where appropriate" under the Equality Act.
The UK Equality and Human Rights Commission is concerned by a Green Party resolution that recognizes “Zionism is racism”. This has sparked numerous complaints of possible discrimination against Jews, and the Israeli Foreign Ministry has already banned the party leader from entering the country. 🇬🇧✡️🚫
