Why LSU's expensive pursuit of Yam Madar, 25, is a troubling sign for Will Wade
The Tigers are pursuing the 25-year-old EuroLeague guard as they try to strengthen a 40th-ranked transfer class.
LSU is reportedly prepared to offer 25-year-old guard Yam Madar a $5 million salary, according to an Israeli publication. Madar, a former Boston Celtics draft pick, currently plays for Hapoel Tel Aviv in the EuroLeague.
Tigers head coach Will Wade is attempting to assemble a competitive 2026-27 roster. Madar has competed at the highest levels of Israeli and European basketball since 2018, providing significant professional experience.
Often, international players seasoned in professional organizations are classified as sophomores or juniors upon entering NCAA play. Madar will turn 26 during the 2026-27 season, though it remains unclear if his military service qualifies for eligibility exemptions.
Tennessee guard Ethan Burg was classified as a 23-year-old sophomore for the 2025-26 season after serving two years in the Israeli military. This precedent may inform Madar's eligibility determination.
The NCAA Division and Cabinet are expected to discuss a "five for five" eligibility proposal later this week that would allow players five years of eligibility beginning with their high school graduation or 19th birthday.
