David Furones: NFL’s Brendan Sorsby Ruling Saves Dolphins From Difficult Decision
The league said Sorsby’s petition did not justify a special entry path and told him to prepare for the 2027 NFL Draft.
On Wednesday, the NFL rejected Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby's supplemental draft bid, stating it will not hold a draft this year.
Sorsby was ruled permanently ineligible by the NCAA in May after placing 40 bets on his own team, then dropped a federal lawsuit to pursue supplemental draft entry.
In a letter to the quarterback, the NFL Management Council stated the league has "sole discretion to determine whether it is appropriate" to hold a draft and that Sorsby's petition "does not provide a basis" for an exception.
Barring another legal challenge, Sorsby must wait until the 2027 draft to join the league, with the NFL encouraging him to focus on treatment for his gambling addiction.
Junior college remains the only realistic path for Sorsby to play football in 2026, though franchises are unlikely to spend capital on him until he demonstrates accountability for his gambling history.
