Tanuma Okitsugu's father, Okitsugu, who became a senior councilor in the Tokugawa Shogunate, served the eighth Shogun, Tokugawa Yoshimune, as a page and then a Shogunate vassal (Hatamoto). His son, Okitsugu, began his career as a page to Yoshimune's successor, Tokugawa Ieshige (1734).
