Wessex Water Told to Pay £11m over Wastewater Failures and Sewage Flows
Wessex Water will fund an £11 million plan to reduce sewage spills after failing to maintain its wastewater network, following similar actions against other UK water firms this year.
- On Tuesday, the regulator said it had drawn up an £11m enforcement package after Ofwat found Wessex Water failed to operate, maintain, and upgrade its wastewater network, causing spills.
- Ofwat's country-wide probe found five providers paid £240m in redress earlier this year, and Lynn Parker said breaches still must be corrected after Wessex Water's lack of investment caused spills.
- Wessex Water and its shareholders will fund upgrades, extra monitoring equipment at storm overflow sites, and customer rainwater measures, while Ofwat said customers will not pay enforcement costs.
- A public consultation will now be held before Ofwat finalises the deal, with Wessex Water saying the funds will benefit customers rather than HM Treasury.
- Wessex Water plans a 300m investment by 2030, including expanding treatment sites and promoting sustainable rainwater management to prevent overloads during heavy rain.
