Wes Streeting: Striking doctors are punishing health service staff
The BMA says resident doctors are still underpaid and short of training posts after rejecting a government offer of 1,000 extra places.
- On Tuesday, resident doctors began a six-day walkout, their longest yet, as Health Secretary Wes Streeting stated the action will cost the NHS £300 million and disrupt planned care.
- The British Medical Association initiated the walkout after rejecting government offers last month, as doctors demand a 26 per cent pay restoration to 2008 levels to offset inflation-driven erosion.
- Hospital consultants are charging up to £313 an hour for cover shifts, while a YouGov poll of 4,375 adults conducted Tuesday shows 55 per cent of the public now oppose the BMA action.
- Ministers have withdrawn an offer to create 1,000 extra training posts for resident doctors, citing they can no longer afford the expansion due to strike-related financial strain.
- Senior doctors, including consultants and specialists, face ballots on industrial action running until July 6, signaling potential for further widespread disruption across the medical profession beyond resident doctors' walkout.
