Last weekend, when the Japan Meteorological Agency announced that cherry blossoms in Tokyo were in full bloom, I went to the cherry blossom viewing spot of Chidorigafuchi near the Imperial Palace. Drawn by the smiling visitors passing by under the pale pink cherry blossoms, I turned toward the nearby Chidorigafuchi National Cemetery, where the remains of unidentified soldiers and civilians who died overseas during the last war are kept.
