Warsaw turns to Ukraine for drone warfare expertise after Russian drones enter Polish airspace
Poland aims to enhance its drone warfare skills with Ukrainian support after Russian drones breached its airspace, revealing NATO's defense gaps, officials said.
- On Thursday, Poland's defense chief traveled to Kyiv seeking Ukrainian help to develop drone warfare capabilities just over a week after Russian drones exposed NATO's vulnerability.
- Since Russia's invasion, drones have taken a central battlefield role over more than three years, and Ukraine has developed long-range drones and missiles Poland seeks to learn from.
- Last week, the Russian incursion prompted NATO to send fighter jets to shoot down drones, while Ukraine's air defenses shot down or jammed 48 of 75 drones, heightening tensions in eastern Europe.
- Poland's defense minister said the two countries will sign the Poland-Ukraine defense cooperation agreement and acquire drone-operating capabilities, while NATO strengthens its posture on the eastern flank bordering Belarus, Russia and Ukraine.
- Moscow recently showcased its conventional and nuclear military power in exercises with Belarus, fueling Western concerns as strikes targeted sites more than 1,000 kilometers from Ukraine.
