Voters to head to polls on election day in over 1,000 municipalities across Quebec
- Sunday, Montrealers across 19 boroughs are heading to the polls with 421 candidates competing for 103 city positions.
- After the Oct. 3 deadline many positions were filled by acclamation, leaving 568 mayoral seats and 4,034 municipal council seats filled unopposed while 15 independent cities on the island of Montreal also hold elections.
- STM maintenance workers are striking from Nov. 1 to Nov. 28, limiting transit service on election day as the labour tribunal rejected STM's request and Julie St-Arnaud Drolet said `It's definitely an additional obstacle`.
- As of 12:30 p.m., Élections Montréal estimated voter turnout at around 17 per cent, and Quebec law requires employers to provide at least four hours for voting.
- Several polls showed nearly one-third of electors undecided, adding uncertainty as results begin with 523 mayors and 2,761 municipal councillors to be elected and voting stations open today.
