Proposed Virginia law addresses any school instruction on January 6 riot

Virginia's new law prohibits teaching falsehoods about the Jan. 6 Capitol attack, requiring it be called a violent insurrection and banning claims of election fraud, lawmakers said.

  • On Thursday, the Virginia General Assembly approved HB333 to require public K-12 schools in Virginia to describe January 6, 2021, as an unprecedented, violent attack and ban portrayals of it as peaceful.
  • As the sponsor explained, HB333 was prompted by official messaging; Dan Helmer said it responds to a White House webpage and told CBS News, "The White House has tried to rewrite history."
  • Passage prompted pushback from Republican legislators; HB333 passed Virginia House 53-47 and Senate 21-19, with Tom Garrett, Delegate , stating, "It tells us what we re not allowed to say, and it tells us what we must say."
  • Gov. Abigail Spanberger is expected to sign HB333, making its instructional rules binding where local school boards adopt Jan. 6 programs, while similar bills are being discussed by the New York legislature.
  • Beyond classrooms, advocates cite nearly 1,600 clemency grants, over 140 officers injured, and five deaths, as Capitol memorial plaque installation highlights disputes over Jan. 6.
