Virginia Man Charged with Murder in Crash that Killed Family of 4 on I-75 in Oakland County
Prosecutors say Charles Dean Pace had a blood alcohol level more than three times the legal limit and was speeding over 90 mph.
On Monday, Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald announced four counts of second-degree murder against Charles Dean Pace, 27, of Glen Allen, Virginia, stemming from a July 1 crash on I-75 that killed a family of four.
Prosecutors allege Pace was driving a Ford F-250 at speeds exceeding 90 mph while weaving in and out of lanes; investigators reported his blood alcohol level was more than three times the legal limit.
The crash claimed the lives of Zakeria Sharon Dodson, 23, and Tieree Powell, 24, along with their children Nalani Powell, 3, and Karter Powell, 2.
During Tuesday's arraignment at the 52-2 District Court, a judge denied bond for Pace and remanded him to jail; defense attorney Elias Muawad noted he has been employed for 10 years.
McDonald cited precedents including Angel Melendez-Ortiz, sentenced to 74 years in 2025, and Marshella Chidester, sentenced to 25 to 50 years, to justify the rare murder charges; Pace returns to court July 14.
