Vietnam says more tariff negotiations with US needed
- From May 19 to 22, Vietnam’s Trade Minister Nguyen Hong Dien led the Vietnamese delegation in continued trade discussions with the United States held in Washington.
- The talks aim to avoid a threatened 46% U.S. Tariff on Vietnamese goods, which was postponed until July and temporarily replaced by a 10% rate.
- Vietnam’s delegation included officials from construction, agriculture, technology, the State Bank, and the Finance Ministry, while Hanoi took steps to reduce its trade surplus with the U.S.
- Vietnam posted a trade surplus of more than $123 billion with the U.S. In 2024, and both countries engaged in discussions aimed at addressing key issues to advance the negotiations for a bilateral trade deal.
- The negotiations seek to sustain balanced economic ties and could shape Vietnam’s adaptation to geopolitical shifts and future trade cooperation with the U.S.
