In 1999, screenwriter Gail Simone coined the concept of “women in refrigerators” to refer to the tendency of many superhero comic book plots to consign female characters to tragedies of all kinds –murders, sexual assaults, etc.– as a pretext for developing stories starring exclusively men and focused entirely on their tribulations.
