At 106, oldest surviving veteran of Japan’s 1941 attack on Hawaii dies
- Vaughn Drake Jr., believed to be the oldest survivor of the 1941 attack, died at 106 in Lexington on April 7.
- Drake, born in Winchester, KY, on Nov. 6, 1918, served as a 23-year-old Army engineer during the Pearl Harbor attack.
- He served with the Army Corps of Engineers helping build barracks at Kaneohe Naval Air Station when the Japanese attacked.
- Drake recalled, "We were getting ready to go to breakfast, and we heard all these planes flying over and making a lot of noise."
- Following the war, Drake became a registered engineer and had a career spanning over 50 years before retiring in 1981.
