Vandals damage headstones at historic Sooke cemetery
Residents said the vandalism is the worst at the site, and one community member offered a $100 reward for information.
- Several headstones were damaged at Sooke's historic cemetery on Maple Avenue, including the grave of early pioneer John Muir, marking the site's most severe case of vandalism.
- Murray Lambert of the Sooke Lions Club called the destruction unacceptable because the cemetery honours people who helped build the community. He emphasized the scale: "Between the broken headstones and the headstones that have been pushed over, there's no need for that whatsoever."
- Lambert is personally offering a $100 reward for information leading to those responsible and urged anyone with photos or videos to share them with police or Crime Stoppers.
