DHS Expedites 36 Miles of Border Wall, Waiving Environmental Laws
- On Thursday, waivers were granted by DHS leadership to accelerate the building of 36 miles of new border wall segments in Arizona and New Mexico.
- The waivers build on a prior waiver signed by Noem for California wall construction and allow bypassing environmental laws to speed up these projects.
- The projects covered by the waivers span various areas, including approximately 24.7 miles in the Tucson Sonoita region, the Yuma Sector's Barry M. Goldwater Range with seven identified gap closures, and secondary wall constructions in the El Paso Sector.
- Customs and Border Protection indicated that these efforts will address important vulnerabilities and improve security measures within the U.S. Border Patrol’s El Paso, Tucson, and Yuma operational areas by reducing bureaucratic hold-ups.
- The Department of Homeland Security has authorized exemptions based on a 1996 immigration law to accelerate the building of physical barriers and strengthen U.S. Border Patrol efforts along the border.
