US Slaps New Visa Restrictions on Nicaraguan Travel Agencies and Tour Operators

The U.S. State Department revokes visas and restricts entry for Nicaraguan travel sector figures aiding illegal immigration under immigration law Section 212(a)(3)(C).

  • The U.S. State Department on Monday moved to impose visa restrictions on people in Nicaragua who have enabled illegal immigration, including owners of transportation companies, travel agencies and tour operators.
  • Investigations cited by the State Department show entities facilitated travel through Nicaragua, enabled by the Nicaraguan dictatorship’s permissive-by-design migration policies, prior to April visa restrictions on more than 250 Nicaraguan officials of President Daniel Ortega.
  • The State Department cited Section 212 of the Immigration and Nationality Act as authority, but the U.S. State Department statement did not specify who was targeted or which visas were revoked.
  • The department is revoking currently valid visas and imposing other restrictions to bar entry for targeted individuals in Nicaragua under U.S. entry restrictions under immigration law.
  • Against a backdrop of broader U.S. pressure, the new restrictions build on April actions when more than 250 Ortega government officials faced visa bans, the department said.
