Katie Lane Confirmed as Newest Montana Federal Judge
Lane, 34, overcame a rare American Bar Association “not qualified” rating after Republicans said her Montana legal background made her fit for the lifetime post.
On Tuesday, the U.S. Senate voted 52-46 along party lines to confirm Bozeman attorney Katie Lane as a U.S. District Court judge for the District of Montana.
The nonpartisan American Bar Association gave Lane a "not qualified" rating, citing her lack of trial experience and noting she has never served as lead counsel in any case.
With only nine years of legal practice, Lane falls below the ABA's 12-year minimum standard for federal bench candidates, who should possess significant trial experience.
Montana Sens. Steve Daines and Tim Sheehy released a joint statement congratulating Lane, calling her "well-qualified to serve" with "distinguished record of public service" and commitment to the Constitution.
Lane's confirmation reflects a broader pattern during President Donald Trump's second term, where Republicans have confirmed multiple judicial nominees despite receiving "not qualified" ratings from the ABA.
