US renews funding for demining in Cambodia despite foreign aid cuts

The U.S. provided $675,000 to support Cambodia’s demining programs despite aid freezes and border tensions, aiding clearance of millions of land mines causing thousands of casualties.

  • On Monday, the U.S. Embassy announced the United States will grant $675,000 for demining programs in Cambodia after a freeze on foreign assistance raised doubts.
  • An estimated 4 million to 6 million land mines litter Cambodia's countryside, and Cambodian deminers are among the world's most experienced, the U.S. Embassy said.
  • Soon after February's aid-freeze announcement, a waiver allowed $6.36 million in scheduled aid to continue until November 2025, funding mine clearing through April 2026, Heng Ratana said.
  • Thailand accused Cambodia of planting new antipersonnel mines along their border, sparking five days of clashes in late July, while Cambodia denied the allegations and the Trump administration's decision earlier this year to close USAID drew criticism.
  • The U.S. remains by far the world's largest source of foreign assistance as China promotes its own demining aid while USAID funds projects in around 120 countries.
