U.S. Pleads for New Beefed-up Multi-National Force in Haiti
The United States and Haiti seek to expand the UN force to 5,550 personnel for stronger anti-gang operations and securing critical infrastructure, officials said.
- On Monday, the United States and Haiti called to transform the Multinational Security Mission into a stronger force, while the United Nations Security Council is expected to vote soon.
- Approved in 2023 and led by Kenya, the Multinational Security Mission deployed far fewer than the 2,500 expected and was under-equipped and under-funded.
- A draft resolution says the proposed multinational force could include up to 5,550 uniformed personnel, targeting gang territorial control, securing critical infrastructure and conducting anti-gang operations.
- Diplomatic sources note that veto-capable members Russia and China have not fully participated in UN Security Council negotiations, and Christopher Landau, United States Deputy Secretary of State, warned adoption is not guaranteed.
- Secretary-General Antonio Guterres suggested several months ago creating a UN support office to provide logistical and financial aid, while Laurent Saint-Cyr said the mission `remains limited in its ability to act,' underscoring operational limits.
