New US sanctions target billionaire Iranian financier Babak Zanjani
Treasury said the designations target nine firms and four people tied to Zanjani’s network, which it says helped move funds for Iran.
On Friday, the United States announced sanctions against nine firms and four people associated with Iranian financier Babak Zanjani for efforts to evade existing measures as U.S. forces escalated strikes in the Gulf.
Zanjani, a billionaire convicted of fraud in 2016, had his death sentence commuted in 2024 and re-emerged by 2025 as a key financial backer for various Iranian government infrastructure and digital asset projects.
Targeting Zanjani's Iran-based "Dot One." conglomerate, the Treasury Department identified networks used to launder money for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, including an $800 million rail contract and digital asset exchanges designated by the Office of Foreign Assets Control.
With inflation at 60%-plus and the rial hitting record lows, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said "The Iranian regime continues to pay a steep economic price for its reckless behavior."
Military hostilities in the Gulf have ratcheted up pressure on Iran's economy, while the United States continues cutting off economic access for corrupt regime elites, their financiers, and facilitators.
The United States extended sanctions against the network of Iranian businessman Babak Zanjani, convicted of corruption and subsequently freed from the death penalty.
