US Justice Dept says it cannot provide unredacted Epstein files for New Mexico probe
Torrez says redacted materials are hindering New Mexico’s Epstein probe, and the state may pursue legal remedies if the files are not delivered by July 31.
On Tuesday, the New Mexico Department of Justice announced that federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York will not support "the only active criminal investigation into Epstein."
New Mexico Attorney General Raul Torrez reopened the investigation in February into allegations that Epstein trafficked and sexually abused women and girls at Zorro Ranch, seeking unredacted federal files since then.
Torrez criticized previous materials as "in no way responsive to what is a legitimate request," while a Justice Department spokesperson countered that "federal law... do not allow us to release millions of unredacted documents."
With a July 31 deadline looming, Torrez warned he would pursue "all available legal remedies" if the department continues withholding the files.
Late Wednesday, the U.S. Attorney's Office stated it is "seeking dialogue" with the New Mexico Department of Justice to reach an accommodation consistent with protective orders.
