US judge orders Trump administration to explain tarp obscuring Kennedy Center facade
Judge Christopher Cooper ordered the center to explain the coverings and report on operations and public access as renovation plans remain in dispute.
On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper ordered the Trump administration to explain the purpose and status of the tarp and scaffolding covering the Kennedy Center's facade after workers removed President Donald Trump's name.
Workers removed Trump's name on June 13 following a court ruling that the administration unlawfully added it to the building in December, triggering a legal dispute over the center's control and renovation plans.
Democratic Representative Joyce Beatty, an ex officio board member who filed the lawsuit, called the coverings an "act of petty defiance" intended to frustrate restoration of the building's original status.
Kennedy Center President and CEO Matt Floca reported management has deferred long-term programming adjustments due to uncertainty, while the board considers full or partial closures; Cooper required a status report by July 31.
The dispute stems from Congress' approval of $258 million to renovate the Kennedy Center, with the administration seeking an appeals court hold on the removal order while security barricades surround the site.
