Colorado Hasn’t Seen Elevated Cases of Cyclosporiasis Despite Outbreaks Elsewhere
Michigan reported more than 2,600 cases as investigators work to trace the contamination source.
Health officials confirmed more than 4,000 Cyclospora cases across 31 states as of July 14, 2026, marking an unusually large outbreak during the seasonal surge.
Investigators face significant challenges due to the parasite's 2-14 day incubation period, compounded by recent budget cuts reducing the Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network's monitoring capabilities.
Michigan has been hit hardest with approximately 2,600 confirmed cases. Craig Hedberg, professor of Environmental Health Sciences at the University of Minnesota, said "the lack of information on possible sources for the outbreak is frustrating."
Doctors recommend seeking diagnosis for diarrhea lasting over 48 hours, as standard tests often miss the parasite. Infectious disease experts advise cooking produce to 158 degrees Fahrenheit to eliminate the infection.
The cyclosporiasis season typically runs through August 31, and officials note no specific food recall has been issued as investigators continue searching for the contamination source.
