Security Video: Golden Retriever Begs to Play with Intruder After Home Break-In
Surveillance video showed the man eating, napping and fleeing a police drone as officers arrested him on burglary and narcotics charges.
- On Sept. 5, a man broke into a Sherman Heights home while owners Dante Rowley and Stephanie Calderon monitored the intrusion via Ring cameras from Chicago. Their 4-year-old golden retriever, Nash, repeatedly tried to befriend the intruder.
- The intruder entered through an upstairs window using a ladder. Calderon called 911 from Chicago but reached authorities in the wrong city, forcing relatives in San Diego to contact local police about the break-in.
- While the intruder napped and ate food from the refrigerator, Nash remained unperturbed, wagging his tail and bringing the stranger toys. Rowley and Calderon were "freaking out" mainly over Nash's safety during the flight.
- Police arrived within minutes and flew a drone through the open upstairs window, flushing the suspect from the home. Officers arrested a 57-year-old man on suspicion of first-degree burglary, battery on a peace officer, and vandalism.
- The surveillance footage gained millions of views on Instagram by the next day. Rowley, head of business and product development at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, said "I tried to make it as funny as possible," while the couple plans security upgrades including a taller fence.
