France has officially submitted the candidature of the Pic du Midi de Bigorre and its observatory to obtain its ranking from Unesco, announced the Minister of Culture on Tuesday. The decision is expected in July 2027.
The candidacy of the Pic du Midi and its observatory is proposed "to illustrate in an exceptional way the pioneering period of establishment of the very first scientific observatories of high mountains. True technical and human prowess", underlines Rachida Dati, Minister of Culture.
