IAEA reports hearing explosions, sees smoke near Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant
ZAPORIZHZHIA NUCLEAR POWER PLANT, UKRAINE, AUG 2 – The attack on an auxiliary facility near the plant caused explosions and smoke, with no immediate radiation spike detected, amid ongoing military tensions, the IAEA said.

- IAEA was informed that the plant's staff reported the auxiliary facility was struck by shelling and drones starting around 9 a.m. local time, coinciding with military activity audible to the IAEA team.
- Smoke from the targeted area remained visible into the afternoon to the IAEA team, despite the auxiliary facility being located 1,200 metres from the site perimeter, with no radiation spike detected.
- The plant's Russia-installed administration said a civilian was killed but no plant employees or emergency services were injured, and radiation levels remained within normal limits.
- It was the latest in a series of incidents highlighting nuclear safety risks at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which has been under Russian occupation since March 2022.
