Ukraine starts new round of talks with US, Kyiv negotiator says

Ukrainian officials meet U.S. counterparts to advance peace talks amid U.S. pressure for territorial concessions, following consultations with European partners, negotiator Rustem Umerov said.

  • On Dec. 19, a Ukrainian delegation led by Rustem Umerov met American officials in the United States as Umerov wrote, 'We are committed to a constructive process.'
  • Amid push to end nearly four years of war, pressure centers on territorial compromises as President Donald Trump's administration increases pressure on Kyiv and Moscow demands the Donbas region.
  • U.S. officials are holding parallel contacts, including expected talks with Kirill Dmitriev, while Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner held Berlin meetings and plan further Russia talks in Miami.
  • Speaking on Dec. 15, President Volodymyr Zelensky outlined agreed documents including a 20-point peace framework, security guarantees and a reconstruction plan, but territorial questions remain unresolved.
  • Officials express hope the process can conclude this month, even as Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, offered no compromise on Dec. 19 and Marco Rubio, U.S. Secretary of State, may join talks on Dec. 20.
