UK Deploys Fighter Jets to Defend Saudi Arabia From Houthi Attacks
The mission adds defensive air patrols, a transport plane and advisers as Houthi strikes on Saudi cities intensify, officials said.
- Britain announced Tuesday that it is expanding military support for Saudi Arabia against the Houthis to include "defensive" air patrols by Royal Air Force Typhoon jets.
- Houthi attacks against Saudi infrastructure have intensified in recent weeks, with the capital's international airport struck 20 times since the beginning of the month.
- Defense Secretary Wes Streeting said Royal Air Force jets will "conduct defensive counter-air operations" to protect cities and infrastructure, though Britain stresses there is no military solution to the conflict.
- Britain will also deploy an Atlas A400M transport aircraft and military advisers, expanding assistance that previously included in-air refueling for Saudi planes.
- Prime Minister Andy Burnham's spokesman denied Britain is being dragged into the broader Yemen conflict, reiterating that support is proportionate and focused on helping Saudi Arabia defend itself.
