Burnham to meet Trump for first time
The leaders are expected to discuss a Ukrainian ceasefire, North Sea drilling and the Falkland Islands as tensions shape the talks.
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham is set to travel to New York next week for the UN General Assembly to meet President Donald Trump for their first in-person conversation, The Times reports. A White House official said the meeting remains unconfirmed.
Since Burnham became prime minister, the two leaders have spoken twice by phone, covering Ukraine and the Middle East. Last week, they agreed on the need to "continue working towards a ceasefire" in Ukraine.
Tensions persist regarding the Falkland Islands and Northern Ireland, with Trump recently wading into disputes during a Dublin visit. Burnham also briefed Trump on plans for a trade ban on imports from illegal Israeli settlements.
During that Dublin visit, Trump called Burnham a "very nice guy" but "on the liberal side, unfortunately." Despite this skepticism, the meeting represents a high-stakes attempt to recalibrate the bilateral relationship.
Burnham intends to "deal with him very upfront" rather than shying away from challenges, aiming to respect the office while navigating Trump's unpredictable approach to the UK-US relationship.
Andy Bernem can meet Donald Trump for the first time in person at the United Nations General Assembly, where the British Prime Minister plans to seek wider support for Ukraine.
Andy Burnham has so far only discussed Ukraine, the Middle East conflict and North Sea drilling with the US president remotely
