Burnham unveils £700m million to drive re-industrialisation in latest devolution push

The scheme will back 6 to 10 stalled industrial and commercial projects and aims to attract up to £2 billion in private investment.

  • On Monday, the Government launched The Strategic Sites Accelerator, a £700 million initiative to help stalled, commercially viable projects get off the ground. Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham unveiled the package as part of his re-industrialisation push.
  • Plans for the accelerator originated from former premier Sir Keir Starmer's 10-year industrial strategy to boost economic growth. The scheme targets barriers including planning constraints, grid connections, and insufficient access to finance that currently block development.
  • The program aims to attract up to £2 billion in private investment while supporting six to 10 nationally important developments with loans, equity, and technical expertise. Potential sites already under consideration include Glasgow, Sheffield, and Burgess Hill.
  • Greater Manchester Mayor Bev Craig called the accelerator 'a welcome step' in addressing 'complex infrastructure, remediation or delivery challenges.' Mayors and local leaders will collaborate with the Government to identify investment opportunities across sectors including defence and manufacturing.
  • Applications for the program remain open until January 19, 2027, complementing the Government's wider devolution drive. Ten new devolution agreements in final stages will establish mayoral authorities across regions including Devon, Surrey, and the Thames Valley.
