UK, Japan set to agree $24 billion investment, tech partnerships
The package includes more than 10 agreements and is expected to create tens of thousands of jobs, Downing Street said.
On Sunday, Prime Minister Keir Starmer hosts Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi at Downing Street to finalize an £18 billion investment and technology package expected to create tens of thousands of jobs across Britain.
The agreements include a five-year pipeline of more than £9 billion for infrastructure and financial services, alongside plans to unlock up to £9 billion for offshore wind projects supporting 5.9 gigawatts of capacity.
Companies including Hitachi Energy, Rolls-Royce, and Eisai will finalize collaborations spanning nuclear technology, power grid expansion, and life sciences. The two nations will also launch a new technology partnership covering AI and semiconductors.
These international deals proceed amid domestic political strain for Starmer following the resignation of John Healey and armed forces minister Al Carns, while Andy Burnham criticized the Labour leader during a speech on Saturday.
Scheduled immediately before the June 15-17 G7 summit in France, this visit underscores the strategic importance of the UK-Japan alliance as both nations prepare to showcase their economic partnership during broader multilateral discussions.
