Hot and Humid Friday to End in Thunderstorms, Met Office Warns
- The Met Office issued amber and yellow weather warnings on Friday evening for thunderstorms across eastern and south-eastern England from Eastbourne to north Norfolk, and parts of Wales and south-west England.
- These warnings follow warm, humid air moving northwards from Spain and Portugal, creating conditions ripe for wet weather and thunderstorms.
- Friday saw temperatures around 7 to 10°C above average, with highs between 27 and 30°C in many eastern areas before thunderstorms brought heavy rain, hail, gusty winds, and possible flooding.
- The Met Office forecast up to 50mm of rain in a few hours and winds exceeding 40-50mph, warning of flash flooding, power cuts, travel disruption, and advising people to avoid travel if possible.
- Conditions are expected to ease by Saturday morning with lower temperatures in the low to mid-twenties in the east and high teens elsewhere, and more settled, drier weather likely from the weekend onward.
