Former EU negotiator warns UK will not be able to pick and choose trade rules
Barnier said EU membership would require the UK to accept the bloc’s four freedoms, including free movement, if it seeks closer market access.
Former European Union Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier warned Prime Minister Andy Burnham that Britain cannot "cherry pick" single market terms, stating European Union members would insist Britain readopt conditions like the free movement of people.
Ahead of the EU-UK summit on November 20 in Brussels, Prime Minister Andy Burnham has sought to explore closer economic ties with Europe to break down post-Brexit trade barriers.
Compliance with the "four freedoms"—goods, services, capital, and people—is required for single market access, Barnier emphasized, adding that recreating the British financial rebate is "off the table."
Comparing Nigel Farage to Marine Le Pen, Barnier dismissed past claims championed by Boris Johnson as "not true," while Farage condemned the negotiator as an "out of touch" bully.
Rejoining remains an option for reshaping long-term ties, though Prime Minister Andy Burnham has ruled out major changes before the next election, even as Barnier noted the "door is open" for Britain to rejoin as a European Union member.
