Poundland Owners to Give Evidence to MPs in Private Session
Gordon Brothers will answer MPs’ questions in private as it seeks buyers for Poundland and a rescue deal that could protect about 11,000 jobs.
MPs on the Business, Innovation, Science and Trade Committee backed down from demands for a public hearing and will instead meet Poundland's US owners, Gordon Brothers, in a private session next week.
Gordon Brothers filed a notice to appoint administrators last week, providing 10 days of breathing room as the retailer's 600 stores and roughly 11,000 workers face an insolvency deadline without a rescue deal.
Shopworkers' union Usdaw warned there are "serious questions that need to be answered in public, not behind closed doors," citing fears of asset stripping and staff job losses.
Committee Chair Liam Byrne confirmed the private session will occur in "the first instance" to protect sensitive commercial information, stating, "We want those talks to succeed."
Active sale talks continue with several credible buyers, including Xyra Group Holdings and Martin Property Group, as Gordon Brothers races to secure a deal before insolvency protection expires.
