Brussels removed talk of ratifying Canada trade deal in EU summit text: Wilkinson
Wilkinson says Brussels dropped ratification language because 9 of 27 EU countries still have not approved the trade deal.
Canada's envoy Jonathan Wilkinson confirmed to the Senate today that Brussels removed language about ratifying the decade-old Canada trade deal from a joint statement issued at the Montreal summit last week.
Internal concerns that the European Union should not dictate decisions to its member states prompted Brussels to remove the phrasing, Wilkinson testified to the Senate committee.
Nine of the 27 European Union countries have yet to ratify the trade deal, though Wilkinson expects four or five of those nations to complete the process within the next 12 months.
Canada and the European Union signed a separate alliance pact at the Montreal summit intended to foster deeper cooperation on energy and security matters.
Canadian diplomats have engaged with members of the National Rally, led by Marine Le Pen, amid concerns regarding the rise of "ultra-right" political movements in France.
