UK and Netherlands Forge $3.2B Maritime Partnership
The deal will equip both navies with four ships each and support operations with long-range drones and autonomous systems.
- On Tuesday, the UK and The Netherlands signed a £2.4 billion agreement to build eight next-generation amphibious transport ships, with each nation operating four 15,000-tonne vessels.
- This partnership builds on over 50 years of maritime cooperation through the UK-Netherlands Amphibious Force. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said it delivers "long term security for both the UK and The Netherlands" amid emerging threats.
- Ships will be built in UK shipyards, including the recapitalised Harland & Wolff facility in Belfast, which Navantia UK operates. These 160-metre vessels are optimized for hybrid drone warfare, supporting the Royal Navy's transition to advanced capability.
- As close NATO and Joint Expeditionary Force allies, the two nations will work together to protect critical undersea infrastructure and deter threats in the North Atlantic and High North. Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis MBE noted the deal strengthens collective defence capabilities.
- Donato Martinez, Chief Executive of Navantia UK, called these ships a "vital component of Britain's sovereign naval defence capability." The platforms will replace Albion-class assault ships while operating future long-range drones and autonomous systems.
