Uganda agrees to a deal with the US to take deported migrants if they don’t have criminal records
Uganda will accept deported migrants from the US only if they have no criminal records or unaccompanied minors, preferring those from African countries, as part of a temporary arrangement.
- On Thursday, Uganda's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Kampala reached a temporary deal to accept deportees denied U.S. asylum, excluding those with criminal records and unaccompanied minors.
- The Trump administration has stepped up efforts to secure such pacts, using U.S. legal changes and a U.S. Supreme Court ruling to speed removals to third countries like Uganda.
- Uganda already hosts nearly two million refugees and asylum-seekers, officials say the number of deportees Kampala would accept remains unspecified, and it prefers transferees from African countries.
- But Ugandan officials publicly denied a finalised pact and capacity to host deportees, while Human rights groups and UN rights experts warned of risks; Waiswa said `The two parties are working out the detailed modalities on how the agreement shall be implemented`.
- Multiple African states have agreed to receive deportees, including at least three so far; UN rights experts have cautioned these removals may violate international law and raise refoulement risks.
