Two siblings among three children killed after boat capsizes in storm
A severe storm produced winds up to 100 mph, and rescuers pulled seven people from the water after the boat overturned, officials said.
On Friday, July 3, a 25-foot boat capsized on Lake Geneva during a severe storm, killing three children: Kathryn Schmidt, 10, and siblings Caleb Oswald, 6, and Abigail Oswald, 7, among 10 people aboard.
An unprecedented storm brought winds between 90 and 100 mph to Walworth County, and despite the boat operator having "extensive boating experience," conditions deteriorated too quickly for him to find safe shelter.
Authorities confirmed all four children were wearing life jackets of "proper size and fit" at the time of the incident. First responders rescued six adults and one child, but the three children were discovered with the sunken boat.
Memorial funds have raised over $220,000 for the Oswald family and nearly $37,000 for Schmidt. The Oswald family wrote, "While our hearts are broken beyond words, we want their legacy to be one of hope, compassion, and helping others."
Donations directed to children's charities will support sports programs and animal adoption assistance. The families intend these legacies to carry forward the love and generosity the children always showed.
