Two Men Sentenced by US Federal Court for Plot to Kill Iranian-American Journalist
Two Russian mobsters received 25-year sentences after accepting $500,000 from Iran's Revolutionary Guard to assassinate activist Masih Alinejad, prosecutors said.
- On Wednesday in Manhattan federal court, U.S. District Judge Colleen McMahon sentenced Rafat Amirov, 46, and Polad Omarov, 41, to 25 years each, calling it a `terrible, terrible crime that has had terrible, terrible repercussions on some very fine people.'
- Prosecutors said Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps paid $500,000 to high-ranking Russian Mob members Amirov and Omarov for the plot targeting Masih Alinejad, who exposes regime cruelty.
- Testimony at the March trial showed Khalid Mehdiyev was arrested in 2022 near Alinejad's Brooklyn home with a loaded AK-47, and the jury convicted the men on five counts after a two‑week trial at the Southern District of New York.
- Prosecutors sought longer terms, arguing that they requested 55 years while defense lawyers urged 10 to 13 years, and Masih Alinejad said, `They wanted to see me dead on my porch in Brooklyn...,'
- The Justice Department says the case is part of a crackdown on transnational repression and has kept the investigation open, while three indicted Iranians including a senior Iranian military official remain outside U.S. custody and Masih Alinejad has relocated nearly two dozen times.
