Two Men Die After Entering Sea to Help Children at North East Beach
Emergency crews rescued the children, but both men later died after being pulled from the water, police said.
- On Sunday, July 12, two men died at Seaton Carew beach after entering the water to assist two children in difficulty. Emergency services, including the RNLI and Coastguard, were called to the scene at 3:45 PM.
- The two children were recovered safely and taken to North Tees Hospital for checks. The RNLI pulled both men from the water, but they were pronounced dead shortly after receiving immediate medical attention.
- Multiple emergency crews, including the North East Ambulance Service, Hazardous Area Response Team, and Great North Air Ambulance Service, responded to the scene. Paramedics were stationed at what locals refer to as "The Sandy Car Park."
- Cleveland Police Superintendent Glen Ward confirmed the deaths are not being treated as suspicious. Specially trained officers are supporting both families while a file is prepared for the Coroner.
- Superintendent Ward urged the public to "refrain from entering any open water at all," citing the tragedy as a reminder of serious risks during warm weather. He emphasized taking extra care to enjoy the season safely.
