John Caldwell: Two Men Held over Shooting of PSNI Detective
Two men aged 37 and 73 were detained under the Terrorism Act in connection with the attempted murder of DCI John Caldwell, shot nine times in a dissident attack claimed by New IRA.
- The PSNI said two suspects, aged 37 and 73, were arrested on Tuesday, November 18, in the Ardboe area and detained under the Terrorism Act at Musgrave Serious Crime Suite.
- In February 2023, detectives recorded that Mr Caldwell was shot several times while off duty with his young son after coaching a youth football team in Omagh, Co Tyrone.
- Mr Caldwell, shot nine times, has retired on medical grounds and was presented with the King's Police Medal at Buckingham Palace in 2024.
- Several people have previously appeared in court charged with offences linked to the shooting attack, and those court proceedings form part of ongoing prosecutions stemming from the Omagh incident.
- Police said the attack was later claimed by the New IRA and described it as a joint enterprise involving dissident republicans and an organised crime group.
