NORTH-WEST SPAIN, AUG 11 – Wildfires fueled by heat and wind forced over 1,000 residents to evacuate near the Roman gold-mining site of Las Médulas, with authorities suspecting lightning and arson as causes.
- On Sunday, more than 1,000 people were evacuated in north-west Spain as wildfires spread across Galicia and Navarre amid a heatwave.
- Scorching temperatures, low air humidity and shifting strong winds are hampering firefighting efforts, with the extreme heat expected to last until at least Thursday.
- Since Saturday night, Spain's Emergency Military Unit and Regional Junta teams, including fifty military personnel and 22 UME resources, are deployed to combat the Orallo and Fasgar fires, suspected lightning strikes included.
- In Villaverde de los Cestos, smoke forced the National VI motorway between kilometres 370 and 380, displacing around 400 in Carucedo and 700 near Las Medulas.
- Authorities said Roman canals and steep terrain around Las Médulas complicate firefighting, with damage assessment pending once the fire is controlled.
