Turkey’s Kızılelma combat drone hits test target in all-Turkish setup

The Kızılelma drone used Turkey-made sensors, electronics, and the Gökdoğan missile in a Nov. 29 test demonstrating manned–unmanned joint air operations.

  • On Nov. 29, Turkey's fifth Kızılelma prototype scored a direct hit on an aerial target with a beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile off Sinop, Black Sea.
  • Five F-16 fighter jets from the 5th Main Jet Base Command in Merzifon flew in formation with Kızılelma to demonstrate future air-combat concepts through manned-unmanned joint operations.
  • Fitted with Aselsan-made sensors and electronics, the drone employed a TÜBİTAK SAGE-made Gökdoğan beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile, Baykar and the Turkish Ministry of Defense said.
  • Officials framed the result as a domestic milestone, with Arda Mevlütoğlu, Ankara-based defense analyst, calling it a step toward Turkish government ambitions for domestic defense production, while Gen. Ziya Cemal Kadıoğlu, commander of the Turkish Air Force, hailed it as `a new era in aviation history`.
  • Defense News Turkey correspondent Cem Devrim Yaylali reported on the test, drawing on his passion for military photography and naval/defense reporting.
